At SaS, young people are creative partners in the fight against one of the biggest health challenges of our time. We use innovative, hands-on communication and engagement methods to bring the complexities of AMR to life for non-experts. Through co-creation, we ensure that young people not only understand the issue of AMR but also use their creativity to help raise awareness and inspire action.
Our engagement tools include Grassroots Comics, street art, interactive activities, discussions, and exhibitions of resources created by the participants. These participatory approaches tap into the enthusiasm and creativity of young people, making complex topics like AMR relatable and impactful for everyone involved.
The participants in our workshops use the resources they create during the workshops, like comics, artwork and stories to further engage with their peers, and community. By their very nature, comics, theatre and art appeal to children and adults alike and make the audience a lot more receptive to the message than a regular awareness campaign. A sense of ownership of the work ensures that the dialogue on AMR, initiated during these sessions is sustained beyond the workshop. This approach gives rise to many of our awareness resources that are developed in partnership with young people and are made freely available to sustain the dialogue on AMR.
On world Tuberculosis Day 2021, with CSIR-CCMB, we launched a new animation film on antibiotic resistance inspired by the comics developed by the children in the workshops. This film attempts to explain the issue of antibiotic resistance, the science behind this natural process, how human actions have been accelerating the problem and how to tackle it at an individual level, all through the horse’s mouth! Watch the antibiotic, the hero of our story join hands with our children superheroes to “SAVE THE DRUGS AND BEAT THE BUGS”!
