Why Street Art?
Street art has a special way of connecting with people. At Superheroes Against Superbugs, we believe that compelling visuals and powerful stories are essential to raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Our murals and street theatre performances make complex issues like AMR accessible and relatable and turn everyday spaces into vibrant platforms for dialogue and learning or better yet, a reminder. In India, street art has a rich history of sparking social change, and we’re building on that tradition to inspire action against AMR.
Our approach
We team up with artists, schools, and colleges to create murals that tell stories of resilience, awareness, and action against superbugs. By tapping into the creativity of young people, these artworks go far beyond decoration—they spark conversations. Involving students and the larger community helps bridge the gap between scientific concepts and everyday life, making AMR something everyone can relate to.
Our co-creation workshops
We believe that learning about AMR should be fun, thought-provoking, and empowering. That’s why our co-creation workshops offer a hands-on experience where young participants explore the impact of AMR, dive into creative expression, and take ownership of the messages they create about superbugs. Guided by professional artists, they sketch, paint, and develop ideas for the murals. These workshops provide a space to ask questions, share personal stories, and build a collective vision for the mural and for AMR awareness more broadly.
Throughout the process, we invite students, artists, health experts, and educators to contribute, creating a rich exchange of information and ideas. To keep the conversation going, we also share resources on AMR. The workshops culminate in a mural that not only reflects a shared commitment but also catches the eyes of passersby, sparking curiosity and dialogue.
Our AMR murals
In April 2023, we launched our first mural on AMR in Hyderabad with students from St. Anne’s College and artist Dibyush Jena. This mobile mural has since travelled to more than 10 locations—from schools to cafes to hospitals—lighting up the city with vibrant messages about AMR. We use the mural as a conversation starter and organise activities around it to get people involved. One favourite activity is ‘paint your own magnet’ where participants create their own AMR-inspired messages to take home as a reminder.
Building on that success, we joined forces with young students in Delhi, Delhi Street Art, and the Netherlands Embassy to create another mural in the heart of the National Capital. This project brought AMR awareness to life through colourful images crafted by young people and refined by professional artists, fostering a shared sense of responsibility in the fight against superbugs and drawing in more people into the conversation on AMR.
Our street theatre performances add another layer, bringing AMR stories directly to people through engaging narratives and visuals. Together, these murals and performances make AMR relatable, accessible, and impossible to ignore.
