As part of its ongoing mission to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Superheroes against Superbugs (SaS) conducted impactful AMR Frontline Workshops at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar (March 27, 2025) and BR Ambedkar Medical College (April 8, 2025), Bengaluru.

The Kolar workshop featured insightful sessions by Dr. Dhanasekharan (CSIR – NCL), who emphasised the molecular mechanisms of AMR, including genetic mutations and the impact of antibiotic misuse. He highlighted the value of low-cost sequencing and environmental surveillance, such as testing hospital wastewater. Dr. James (SDUMC, Kolar) addressed clinical risk factors and stressed evidence-based prescribing, individualising dosage, and minimising therapy duration. Dr. Kavya (Saptagiri Institute of Medical Sciences) discussed antibiotic policies and the importance of integrating AMS, HIC, and IPC systems using the AWARE classification.

At the Ambedkar workshop, Dr. Shivranjini Moharir (TIGS) highlighted the importance of wastewater surveillance in the emergence of superbugs, Dr. Parashuram (Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital) sparked discussion around empirical treatment, while Dr. Shamily (Haystacks Analytics) drew attention to the declining antibiotic pipeline, describing it as a sinking stock market due to “Bad Bugs and No Drugs.” She emphasised the importance of timely clinical diagnostics and judgment in prescribing.

Both sessions engaged final-year medical students with activities like Taboo – AMR Edition, Kahoot Quizzes, Infection Prevention Challenges, and Jeopardy Jamborees, reinforcing core concepts through interactive learning.

These workshops continue to empower future healthcare professionals to become informed stewards in the fight against AMR.
